What does the Governing Body do?

The Governing Body provides strategic leadership and accountability in schools. It has three key functions:

Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

Holding the Head Teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils.

Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction.

The Governing Body sets the aims and objectives for the school and the policies and targets for achieving those aims and objectives. They monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making and act as a source of challenge and support to the Head Teacher. In action, this means:

Appointing and reviewing the performance of the Head Teacher and senior leaders, including making decisions about pay.

Managing budgets and deciding how money is spent.

Engaging with pupils, staff, parents and the school community.

Sitting on panels and making decisions about things like pupil exclusions and staff disciplinary.

Addressing a range of educational issues within the school including disadvantaged pupils, pupils with special needs, staff workload and teacher recruitment.

Looking at data and evidence to ask questions and have challenging conversations about the school.

How do I contact the Governing Body?

The Governing Body can be contacted at anlabygovernors@gmail.com. Please note however that the Governing Body does not concern itself with the day-to-day management of the school and the majority of questions may be more easily answered by your child’s class teacher, our Pastoral Care Manager, or a member of our leadership team depending on the nature of the query.

How do I join the Governing Body?

We currently have vacancies on our Governing Body and are looking for people to get involved. No prior work experience in the education sector is required, though a keen interest in children’s learning and development, and the ability to analyse and interrogate data is essential in order to effectively hold the Head Teacher and other school leaders to account. Prospective governors also need to be able to attend three full Governing Body meetings per year, as well at least three committee meetings during that same time period. If you are interested in serving as a governor, please call the School Office on 01482 653077 to arrange a meeting with Mr. May to find out more information about what the role entails.
