Year 3

Welcome

Welcome to Year 3.  Team Dahl and Team Murphy.

Our aim is to ensure that the children have high quality and engaging experiences that support their learning and development.  We encourage our children to be independent thinkers and learners by providing them with opportunities to achieve their goals in a number of activities.

Our timetable is set out so that our children have time to work within small groups, as well as independently completing challenges.

What we will be learning this year...

Autumn Term

Our topic is ‘Pebble in my Pocket’.  Over the coming term we will be learning all about history from the Stone Age to the Iron Age.  We will be linking our topic across the curriculum areas.  At the end of the topic we will invite parents in for an enterprise afternoon to share with them all the achievements the children have made.

Spring 1

Our topic is ‘Heroes and Villains’.  At the beginning of this topic we will look at villains, real and imagined, welcoming a well-known villain into Year 3.  We will then move on to looking at heroes and heroines, from the past to the present day, from fictional to real-life and from local to further afield.  Our topic has a music and PSHE focus.  By the end of the topic we will be able to perform a song we have learnt, a rap that we have written ourselves, have created a bust and an information booklet on the hero of our choice and be aware of what makes a hero or heroine and how we ourselves can be heroes in our everyday life.

Spring 2

Our topic this term is 'Predators'.  We will begin the topic with a surprise visit from a mystery predator.  Will it be a bug-eating lizard or an eagle eyed bird of prey?  This term our topic has a science focus.  By the end of the term we will have learnt about creepy crocodiles and amazing alligators, the deadly assassin bug and the voracious venus fly-trap.  We will write an information leaflet about our favourite predator and compose a poem about a predator or it's prey. We will use what we know to create the ultimate predator; the apex of the chain.  Crossing our dad's with a peregrine falcon or grandma with a great white shark!  What incredible species can Year 3 create?

Summer 1

Our topic this term is 'Scrumdiddlyumptious!'.  Tuck in and enjoy a yummy journey of discovery, tasting fantastic fruits, venerable vegetables and tantalising treats!  This term our topic has a design and technology focus.  By the end of the term we will have read lots of delicious stories about food, had fun with our very own vegetable orchestra and tried our hands at fruit sculpture.  We will create our own recipes and learn all about how good food keeps you fit and strong.  The end of the topic will be all about creating the best smoothie there has ever been, using all the knowledge we have gathered over the weeks.

Summer 2

Our topic this term is 'Mighty Metals'.  Our topic will begin when we get out and about in our local area, starting with a visit to the local playground to see what we can find out about mighty metals.  This term our topic has a science focus.  By the end of the term we will have looked at forces, magnets and different metals.  We will meet Hogarth the Iron Man's companion and see if we can create our own version, making sure it's strong, sturdy and ready to rumble.  We will create reports, instructions and poetry around our scientific topic.  If you were a metal, what metal would you be?  Maybe you're not a metal at all, but a force to be reckoned with!

English and Maths

We will be developing our English and Maths skills alongside all of our themes.

Children will have lots of opportunities to talk, write, read and perform so that they can develop all of their language and communication skills.  Quality texts are used in all lessons to help encourage to develop a ‘passion for reading.

For our maths we will be continuing to use and improve our ‘maths voices’. We will be learning about number, shape, measures and data handling.

How to help with learning at home?

We value and encourage parents to work alongside their children.  Here are a few websites that would be of benefit to your child.
